A chance to lay the first marker in an interesting Group F action on Saturday will see the Republic of Ireland host Hungary. This match at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin between the Boys in Green and the Magyars comes with our prediction of both teams scoring goals.
Portugal and Armenia are the other two teams in the group, which will see only the winner qualifying directly for the World Cup, while the second-placed team advances to the playoffs.
The Boys in Green haven’t featured in the World Cup finals since 2002, where they reached the last 16, so there’s so much at stake for them. Ireland’s recent two games ended in draws when they played Luxembourg and Senegal in international friendlies.
That makes it four games unbeaten for the hosts (W2, D2), who will hope to use that form to their advantage. Recent form doesn’t augur well, though, as Ireland failed to win their last five home World Cup qualifiers (D3, L2).
Hungary’s wait for a World Cup finals spot was even longer, as it was 1986 when they last qualified for the global tournament. They did win against Azerbaijan (2-1) in their latest fixture, an international friendly, but it was their lone win across six games (W1, D1, L4).
